Olivia took a deep breath in and tried to relax as she completed a tricky lane change after merging onto the highway. Seeing a chance, she shot through across 2 more lanes into the commuter-only lane, blithely ignoring the 2 passengers or more rule. In her sleek hybrid, she could get away with it; in this classic convertible, not so much. Gunning the Thunderbird's big V8, she easily passed a lumbering dump truck that should have been hugging the outside lane and dropped in behind an empty cab.
I have got to move closer to the office, she grimaced, scrolling through her playlists for something soothing. This commute is killing me! At least when I get home, I'll have Kitten to snuggle with. A few minutes with her curled up in my lap, and everything will seem better.
She watched carefully to ensure she didn't miss her exit; the next one was on the far side of a bridge of a world's record length. That would just add to all the stress she was carrying; the stress she was aching to relieve. The stress that Kitten was going to alleviate. She thought of Kitten tangled in the bed sheets, and smiled.
Once Kitten gets me relaxed, it will all have stopped mattering. She'll be waiting at the door when I walk in, and leap on me the minute my coat is off. I'll take her to the couch with me and we can settle in for the night together. As her exit approached, Olivia felt happier than she could remember than any night in recent memory. Taking Kitten in had certainly been the right decision. She remembered how the poor little thing had looked when she found her near the dumpsters behind her elegant condo. Kitten had been thin and weak from not eating properly, and sick from being out in the cold without anyone to protect her, but nothing worse, thank God. Kitten's enormous eyes had looked up at Olivia from what she had been eating (trash pulled from the dumpster, she remembered with a shudder) and she was lost. She had scooped Kitten up and taken her directly upstairs. She had taken Kitten into her apartment and set her down on the couch. Olivia had gone into the bathroom to fill the bathtub. She had turned around suddenly to find Kitten right behind her and she had nearly frightened them both half to death.
At long last, Olivia turned into her driveway. She pulled the enormous fuel hogging T-bird into its parking spot and locked it up. She grabbed her coat from the seat, pulled her briefcase out of the back and set off to the front door. Her high heels clicked smartly on the paving stones on the pathway. As she reached for the doorknob, she realised how very happy she was. She slid her key into the lock and turned the handle.
There she was...Kitten! All eyes, adoring, on Olivia.
Olivia set down her bags, hung up her coat, turned on one elegant heel, and held out her arms. Like a shot, Kitten was in them, snuggling up to Olivia. She rubbed her face against Olivia's, delighted to see her home again. Olivia walked carefully in her high heels to the living room couch, Kitten in her arms. She settled back against the couch before she pulled Kitten's mouth to hers for a long deep kiss...
Did you miss Me today, Kitten? Olivia breathed.
"Oh, yes, Mistress I did", Kitten sighed.
